I have a 1990 Chrysler New Yorker 5th Avenue. The horn doesn't work but everything else on the steering column works. I was told there is a fuse for the horn. Is that correct? And if so, which fuse is it that I need to replace????

Yes there is a fuse for the horn Your owners manual should tell you where the fuses are located. They are usually on the driverside near the bottom left floor board inside the car. Or under the hood of your car in a black covered box that will say fuses and relays. It will usually be spelled out horn or abrieviated hrn. You can pull the fuse out and visually inspect it. look for a gap in the wire that is in the fuse. If there is a spot missing or fuse is black replace it. A test light can also be used to test fuses. one end if the test light wire should be connected to battery negative post or to any grounded metal part of the car.... A bolt or bare piece of metal. The test light probe should be used to touch the metel showing one one side of the fuse.If it lights up touch the other side. if both sides light up fuse is good .If one side does and the other side doesn't replace fuse. Other possibilities are a wire has come apart from hoen or contact point where you push to make the horn blow. Hope this helps. It's as Laymans terms as I can get

The manual should show where the fuses are and which one is which.

If it doesn't show which one is which, they may well be labeled (they usually are) in the plastic of the fuse box.

If they are not labelled, there is a nifty little fuse tester gadget that you can buy at almost all auto parts stores, it touches the back side of the fuse and lights up if the fuse is good -- find the one that doesn't light up and replace it.

Other things besides a fuse can cause this problem:
(1) The horn itself could be bad (not likely, but possible)
(2) The horn switch might be broken (also not likely but possible)
(3) The wire might have popped off the back of the horn (more likely and easiest to find)
(4) The wire to the horn could be broken (unlikely and hard to locate, but a continuity tester can be used to check it, they don't cost much)
(5) The horn's connection to the chassis or through the chassis to the battery negative terminal can be bad or too rusty to make proper electrical contact (the continuity tester can be used to check this easily, too -- fixing it is either a matter of cleaning everything up or installing a missing ground strap) (this is not very likely since everything else is working).

The fuses should all be marked as to their function.
Perhaps you have a friend who knows how to use a volt ohmmeter. A fuse holder will indicate the battery voltage if the fuse is bad and the circuit is energized,

Example: If you turn on the headlights and you remove the fuse to simulate a bad fuse the fuse holder will indicate a reading of 12 volts, or whatever the battery voltage is.

That is the way you can check a fuse without the trouble of removing it.

It could be the horn, fuse, relay, button or a broke wire. You have to start checking everything one at a time until you find it.

more than likely its just a loose connection between the horn pad and the wires that connect it to the horn. this is usually caused by excessive horn punching. was the last owner of the car an angry person?
