Basically, a player on a team has to cross the goal line with the ball to score. The team gets 4 chances to score, and if they move the ball 10 yards by their 4th they get 4 more chances. Since the other team gets the ball if they don't move it 10 yards by their 4th chance they may chose to kick the ball to the other team to move them back.
That's it in a nutshell.

The best way to learn is through experience, so sign up to Sky Sports 1 or something (Sky sports 3 is CRAP) and wait for the season to start. I'm a girl and I know a lot about football, just as much as most guys and I learn't through watching not revising names and rules. Take care, good luck.

A team has four downs to get the ball in the N zone or get a first down. First down is achieved by advancing the ball at least ten yards. If a team doesn't get the first down by the forth down they have the option of kicking the ball to their opponent, kicking a field goal which is worth three points, or going for a first down. If the team goes for the first down and dint make it after four downs the ball changes possesion to the other team. A touch down is six points which is followed by a extra point kick or a two point conversion in which the team scores another t-down after. There is the defense and the offense in which each team has 11 people on the field at a time. The quarterback controls the offense, he is the one in the middle.
