Once every week. The place where the hamster pees most clean that every day.

Hamsters can get very sick or very stressed from a smelly cage.

You should get a gerbil instead of a hamster. You can have more than one, they are very friendly and don't bite, they don't eat their young (in fact, both mom and dad take care of the babies), they don't poop and pee as much as much as hamsters, are more active, have long furry tails which I find to be so adorable, and are a blast to play with. I have own both hamsters and gerbils, and find the gerbils to be way more enjoyable. They are easy to care for, I change the litter once a week in my cages and check their food and water every day. It's really up to you. And as for changing the litter for either a hampster or a gerbil, there is no right or wrong answer. While changing the litter every day is unrealistic for me, you just want to provide a clean environment for you pet. It will keep your pet happy and illness free. Once a week should keep your pets environment plenty clean. Especially if you have a gerbil.

To keep the smell down, I'd recommend changings every 3 days. At the VERY least, once a week changings are recommended. You can keep the smell down even more by mixing a little bit of vinegar in some warm water in a spray bottle, and cleaning the cage bottom with it before adding bedding. Vinegar breaks down calcium deposits and ammonia that's left by the urine.

As another poster stated, make sure you use Aspen or some other bedding---anything EXCEPT pine or cedar (they contain volatile phenols that can harm your hamsters' liver).

I have a hamster, I change it about 2 or 3 times a month, my hamster, only poops and pees in one corner of his cage, so it is really easy to clean out, I do that about once a week, then change the bedding every other week. Somtimes longer.

You should change your hamsters cage at least once a week, even they go in the same place, it should be cleaned out, wash it and put new bedding in it, the urine smell is not good for the liitle guy.
Just get one hamster at a time, teddy bears are nice.

I say every 3 days. Be sure to use aspen shavings or care free paper bedding.
