In America, the great issues of the 17th century were largely theological, while those of the 18th century were political.

could someone please help me to at least start an outline for this question, it is an essay question that I hardly know anything about.

Look at the time periods. During the 1600s (17th century), the issues were related to who was coming here, and why. And that was largely a function of religious persecution by the dominant religion in England.

During the 1700s (18th century), there was already a diverse population comprised of many different religions and sects, who were mostly getting along by ignoring each other. But the major points of contention were the relationship between the Colonies and the remote government of England. Political matters.

As for an outline, you can organize chronologically, or identify the types of conflicts (rivalries, authoritarian struggles, rebellions, schisms) and see which exists politically or religiously in each period.

no wonder you are having problems.

There is no such thing as 17th century America. America (as a country) doesnt come into existence until the 18th century.

And even if I assume that you meant:
18th century = theological
19th century = political
this still wouldnt be true.

America has certianly faced religious issues during its existence but to say that any century in American history was dominated by any one of the ideologies would be flawed.

The person that gave you this assignment is an idiot.
