Visible blood is usually caused by haemorrhoids or an anal fissure. This is more likely if the blood is bright red or streaked on the toilet paper. You should ensure that you eat a diet high in fibre, drink plenty of fluids and avoid straining at stool.
A more worrying cause is bowel cancer of some description, (although the blood in these cases is often occult i.e hidden.)
Dark stools generally can be caused by gastro-intestinal bleeding with the origin often stomach ulcers.
Some individuals also have stools blood stained in appearance from eating beetroot.
You MUST see your doctor to get this checked out.
In all probability this will be nothing to worry about, see your doctor as soon as possible and they will be able to reassure you.

It could be a sign of something serious or just hemorrhoids. I am presently having colon/intestinal problems and taking home tests to return to the hospital lab to check for blood in my stool. See your doctor and see what he says.
The test are noninvasive and easy and should be done when you do not known where the blood is coming from and why.

It may be something as simple as hemorrhoids (I have a family member and this is the case). If it's bright red it's generally ok (it means it's more oxidised), whereas if it's dark red it's more worrysome (it could be arterial or internal). If it's very dark, you will want to see you Dr asap just to be on the safe side!! It's embarassing, but (trust me!) the Dr could care less, talking about your stool!!

I don't know about your case but I do know that sometimes if your bowel movement is hard and you strain to hard you can bust a blood vessel..but to be on the safe side if you keep doing it I would see your doctor..

Please check with your doctor immediately. I had a friend who was doing the same thing and she waited too long to go to the doctor and her's was Colon cancer. It may not be this serious but do not wait. Could also be haemorrhoid's or maybe just a infection in the colon. I do not mean to scare you but please check this out.

slim 1234 is correct - this is very common and usually it can go away if you change your diet - you probably sit too long on the toilet and strain too much - try eating oatmeal for breakfast and banana once a day

Take a sample, call your local doc and go see what is up.
Don't panic. It is probably something simple, like hemmoroids, or possibly an ulcer. or not?

You need to see a doctor right away. It could simply be hemmaroids - or worse (colon cancer, for example).
