Owning A Hamster

PRO: Hamsters come in a WIDE variety of types and colors. There's Syrian Hamsters (Teddy Bears), which MUST be kept by themselves. They come in TONS of colors and different hair types. They're very affordable. There's also Dwarf Hamsters (Siberian, Robo, ect.). They come in quite a few colors, and can be housed in same-sex pairs. They're usually just a little more expensive than Syrians.

PRO: Hamsters are very entertaining (get a ball that rolls around the house and you'll be laughing for a good hour after you put them in it) and appealing to look at (they're 'fluffy' and pudgy). When they're from a breeer and hand-tamed, you can handle them a lot.

PRO: They're relatively easy to care for. If the cage is well ventilated, then cleaning should only be required every 3 days or so. They don't eat much, and the food is very inexpensive.

CON: A suitable cage is more expensive than the hamster itself. You can expect to pay about $50 to get a decent set-up that includes a large enough wire cage (with the bars spaced closely together to avoid any escapes), bedding (anything but cedar/pine which are, ironically, the cheapest), food, water bottle, toys, and the excercise wheel.

CON: Hamsters are nocturnal. This means when you're asleep they'll be the most active. Hopefully you're not a light sleeper, otherwise their nightly activities may become a noisey hassle for you to deal with.

CON: Hamsters tend to not be hand-tamed unless you get them from a breeder. They have terrible eye-sight and they bite first, ask questions later. This can make them difficult to handle. And if that's what you want out of a hamster (the ability to handle it), and you don't get one from a breeder, you'll be very disappointed.

CON: They will urinate and defecate on you if you handle them. Their urine can cause allergic reactions for some people.

Mine doesn't smell bad, it could always be the type of bedding you use or how often you clean the cage, i use Carefresh and that works pretty well, also clean the cage about every 1-2 weeks. I have 1 Russian Dwarf and 1 Robo. Dwarf Pros: 1.Are smaller and don't take up as much room 2.Don't have need grooming, like a teddy bear with long fur 3.Robos-like to live in groups Cons: 1.Might tend to bite, but not in all cases 2.Most don't like to live with another hamster 3.Robos-are super fast, and can jump out of your hands

Pros- Cheap, quite easy to look after, small, soft and squidgy.
Cons- Sleep all day, noisy at night, chew everything, smell, pee everywhere, don't do anything funny, die all the time, it's sad when they die = (

They are small, affordable, cute, fun to watch, and take up very little space cage and all.

Downside is the cage must be cleaned everyday or it will STINK, they have a very short life span, and can be very bitey and not much fun to play with.

dont get a hampster. they are boring pets, that crap in your hand every time you pick it up
Pros: cant think of any
Cons: Usually people get sick of them within 3 weeks, and you have to clean out there cage or else it smells like horse crap dipped in goat piss, they are annoying, and they are not the most manly pets. get something else like a bearded dragon.
