I have a Palm Vx that works fine it has a black and white screen and no expansion slot I also have a large Bible program that I need on there that takes up most of my memory. If I upgrade it has to be to a palm because all my software is only compatable with palm. I welcome your advice but I might not pick a best answer. Thank You!

I would recommend that you upgrade to Palm Tungsten T/X, which offers built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, SD card slot for expansion, gorgeous large screen, and powerful applications.

Unfortunately, for $40 you will not be able to get a modern PDA nowadays. The Tungsten T/X retails for $299. The cheapest model that Palm offers is the Palm Z22, which retails for $99, and may be purchased on eBay for a bit cheaper, but not as cheap as $40.

With a Palm Vx, you're missing out on a lot. For example, virtually all the games today are in color which you cannot even see. The backlit color displays on the newer Palms are also make viewing a real pleasure. Further, in addition to larger applications and data files, a large expansion card can also allow the Palm to be an excellent MP3 player (everybody likes music). The list goes on and on.

If you can reasonably afford it, it is perhaps time to upgrade. If it were a newer Palm, say a Tungsten E, the answer would be different. There just isn't enough of a difference in that case to justify an upgrade. In your case, there is enough of a difference.

$40 is not even close for any 2nd hand PDA considered to be modern, but Vx is decidedly old; the closet money can do is Palm Tungsten E at around twice of your budget. It's an OK machine but runs only at 125 MHz.

Forget about CE, I do have a Tungsten T3 and iPaq 2215 both runs XScale PXA 255 and Tungsten beats iPaq senseless in video playback (DivX) and it rarely hangs.

Software is compatible across the hardware versions that exist between Palm Vx and any XScale OS 5 machine, except those that exploit and tweak old hardware.
