This isn't homework! I don't even have homework anymore on this stuff! I just want to know the people's opinions. I was listening to 2112 Overture by Rush and the symbolism in there made me think of this question. Someday the galaxies will all be at war, so I figure if we could blend all the people's best and favorite presidents, maybe it won't happen. So don't yell at me for asking for homework. If I needed homework help, I'd go under homework help.

There are an array of really strong presidents that could qualify as the "best" for different reasons:

Thomas Jefferson: A founding father who participated heavily in the development of our society with his vision of a great democracy (he was responsible for large portions of the Declaration of Independence). On the negative side, he was a slave owner.

Abraham Lincoln: Oversaw our nation at what was considered our darkest time in history. Without deft handling and the benefits of the Northern industrial might, the nation would have been split in at least two pieces, maybe more.

Bill Clinton: Okay, don't stone me ... he may be morally reprehensible but from a governing standpoint he actually did a fairly good job - not too dogmatic on either side of the aisle (Republicans and Democrats) and was able to gnerate some consensus for government. Paid attention to quality of life issues for Americans and also took a rational approach to foreign policy.

I would support Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Not only did he end, or at least lessen the impact of the depression by creating public works projects, he created the lend-lease program to assist the Allies, and geared the nation up to become the industrial nation we are now by mobilizing the war effort.

If you are asking about US presidents, then I think the best one was FD Roosevelt, who tried to find a peacefull resolution to WW2 and (unlike Churchill) really cared about the nations in Eastern Europe.

I'll go with Abraham Lincoln. If someone had been in office, the USA would probably now be the USA and the CSA.

Ronald Reagan's fiscal policy was simplistically brilliant... or brilliantly simplistic. Set us up for decades of economic growth.
