No, Rose and Sharon are not dead. They're just still trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension. Here's what happened:

There are three parts of Alessa:

- Alessa (the original body)

- Good Alessa (Sharon)

- Dark Alessa ("The Demon")

Sharon and Dark Alessa are basically physical manifestations of the two sides of Alessa - the good side and the evil side. As for how Alessa created these physical manifestations, it can only be assumed that she possessed some kind of supernatural power (possibly telekinetic and/or psionic powers, which would obviously lead everyone associated with the cult to call her a witch). Assuming this is true, the ending goes as follows:

1) Dark Alessa (aka - "The Demon") does not, in fact, take over or possess Sharon. Dark Alessa simply recombines with Good Alessa (Sharon), creating a new "reincarnated" Alessa.

2) Alessa's deal with her evil counterpart is not simply that she will help her exact her revenge, but that she will also be granted a new life with a better mother: Rose.

3) In this case, ending has two possibilities:

a.) Alessa's plan works and she is granted a new mother in Rose. However, because Alessa was motivated by hate and revenge and let her evil side take over (as well as Rose's part in the revenge), Rose and Sharon (Alessa #2) are doomed to live in the purgatory-like realm that Dark Alessa created. Therefore, no one really wins.

or

b.) Alessa's plan works and she is granted a new mother in Rose. Now with Sharon's memories to work with after reuniting with her, Alessa can extend her sphere of influence and create a world just like the one Sharon and Rose lived in, where they can stay forever. In other words, Alessa doesn't want Rose to leave her alternate dimension; she wants to keep Rose all to herself.

Hope this helps. :)

No, mother and daughter are in an alternate world. If you remember at the end of the movie when The mother and daughter were holding eachother when all those other ppl were being sliced up with the barb wire in the church her mom said close your eyes it is only a dream she did not keep her eyes shut but stared right into the eyes of the evil one (twin look alike) and if you notice her eyes rolled back like she was falling into a trance. Okay so at the very end what you are talking about when the mom and daughter come home but in the alternate world the daughter says nothing but goes up to her room but as she leaves she has a very strange smirk on her face. There is definately going to be a part two. I played the game and I know part two is coming soon. It will definately involve the father going in search of his wife and daughter in silent hill. I loved this movie the graphics were great and lots of parts were exactly like the game.

The point of the whole movie is that they have somehow ended up in a different dimension. that is also the point of all of the silent hill games. This is why it appears that the road is out but others can still cross it. This also explains how her husband can be right next to her and not see her. Hope it makes sense now.

Some people think that they died in the crash at the begining....I think that they are stuck in the curse the little girl put over the people in silent hill....it was kinda weird huh?

I think they are dead. I think they probably both died in the car crash at the beginning, everyone else in that town was dead so I'm assuming they were too. I don't know though.

I do think they were dead. That was my understanding because the father acted like he didn't see them. That was an EXCELLENT movie! I love an unpredictable plot. The monsters were pretty unconventional too.
