im wondering if there is a neater way for rain to go instead of falling onto the tiles and then into a lower gutter

You could have a gutter up there with no downspout. Just leave the side of the gutter thats up against the roof open and put a roof cut on it. If you don't put a gutter up there then the rain will probably splash back on the house and cause some water damage.

You can use a downpipe but if it's raining the tiles are going to be wet anyway!!

They better have or you will find water in places where you least expect and where you do not want it.
