The Nez Perce,as you said, was an Indian Tribe, led by Chief Joseph. They were willing to flee to Canada and give up the land to the United States. However, the United States kept on fighting and attacking them until Joseph surrended. After that, they were forced to hike back to the U.S. Most of them died or were killed on this hike, including Chief Joseph.

Wiped into obliteration by white man and his gang, led by Custer.

Try looking for the book The Nez Perce Indians and the Opening of the Northwest by Alvin M Josephy, Jr. or Google Josephy & see what you come up with. He's the authority on the Nez Perce.
