Definitely Nosferatu. It's the original version of Dracula (although not quite the Bram Stoker version). He's so scary because the film has got that old, creepy feel to it and for the fact that the actor who played him was a really creepy individual who was way too into the part and gave people the creeps on set. Check the link to find out about it and if you haven't seen it you should give it a try (but not on your own in the dark).

Its close between Pinhead and Leatherface, but Leatherface takes it not because of how he looks but how fast he runs in the final scenes of the film. Most horror villains can catch their prey walking behind them, but Leatherface runs after his victim and this is what makes it more scary.

The scariest characters are ones that seem so darn ordinary that you wouldn't look at them twice although I have to admit I find dolls quite scary

Freddy from nightmare on elm street!!!
i had to walk home from cinema with boyfriend and when we were half way home he said" i told mum i wouldn't be late, so I'm going this way!"
i had a 20 minute walk by myself to get home and i cried all the way!!!
every time i went round a corner i expected Freddy to jump out on me!!
needless to say i never went out with him again xx
