The key to conversation is knowing what topics that person would want to talk about and would be interested in. And yes, introduce yourself or greet the person first of course. But if you are trying to pick someone up you shouldn't act like you want to be friends, because they know you have alterior motives and are just beating around the bush. The best way to make a good impression is to make someone laugh and make your intentions very clear right away without being rude. That's what pickup lines are invented to do, and they work if she hasn't heard it a million times.

Start off with a smile, maintain eye contact and introduce yourself. Good body language is important so get that right picture across.
And of course, depending on the environment, start off with a question......then hopefully, conversation should flow or STOP!

To greet, "hey, what's going on", and to start a conversation, there's this technique used by salesman and just people who want to get better at starting conversations I learned, where you take a main word from a sentence they just said, and use it in the next sentence in a statement or an open-ended question((i.e.- how's it going, them-good, just exhausted. you- oh, why are you exhausted?)) They wouldn't say it if they didn't want to talk about it, and if they don't they'll tell you

hmm pretty not a simple question huh?
it depends.. on the people.. depends on the time..
consider the person u need to talk.. and surely the time and the persons mood. when u are on to start a conversation..
observe the person..
A general question.. (like what is the time?) which is not really anyway related to that person u are talking with.. that will be alright i think..

Start it casual, like maybe ''what's up?'' or ''do you think the weather will stay this nice?'' or maybe, if you are at a very open or busy place, start from there with "do you think (so-and-so) will win the game today?'' or something like that. Just don't use those cheesy pick-up lines unless it's for a laugh. But I wouldn't depend on those. Talk about something nearby, or in the area. Even a ''have you heard.....". Simple as that.

With a smile that comes deep from the heart! If your smile is honest, definitely the other person will smile back to you. After that, it will become easier to start any conversation!
