I've got problems with my 1972 ford mk1 escort. It runs but is very rough and has no power when you drive it. It you try and accelerate hard it just stalls. I've checked the electrics, and all is ok, which leaves fuel. So i'm removing the old fuel pump to c if theres any visible problems with it.
Any ideas on what else to check or look for?

The engine has twin weber 40 DCOE carbs both of which are quite new (2 years old), i've also checked all the inline fuel filters in the pump and both carb inlets and there all spotless ? ? ?

check you timing. If it has jumped time it will run but will run rough and may cause more damage if you don't get it repaired.

Sounds British as the U.S. didn't have Escort until the 80's. If so, it should have a 2bbl weber. Sounds like the accelerator pump. Does it have the old ford 2.3 BEFORE they had the overhead cam? Didn't have a timing belt, I think they were gear driven. I would start by pulling off the fuel line from the carb. Are you getting plenty of fuel there? If so, it will most likely be the accel. pump in the carb. If not, then check the fuel pump. You can get a cheap electrical pump at the part store and install it at the rear of the vehicle close to the tank for a quick fix. Run it straight to the filter and then to the carb. Wire it to the ign. switch. Good luck.

SO FAR I THINK THE FALSE TEETH ANSWER WAS THE MOST EDUCATED
B4 U TAKE OFF THE FUEL PUMP DO A PRESSURE TEST SEE THAT U HAVE ADEQUATE FP PRESSURE AT THE CARBS
IF NOT CHECK FOR A PRESSURE REGULATOR ON THE WAY BACK TO THE FUEL PUMP
IF U HAVE ONE CHECK PRESSURE GOING IN TO THE REGUALTOR

ASSUMING THAT IS ALL OK HAVE SOMEONE HOOK UP A MANOMETER TO CHECK BALANCE OF YOUR TWO WEBERS
THEY MAY BE NEW BUT THEY CAN BE FINNICKY
THE MANAOMETER WILL TEST FLOW OF THE TWO CARBS SO U CAN BALANCE THEM PROPERLY (LOOK IT UP ON THE NET TO SEE HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN)
IF I RECALL THE LAST WEBERS I PLAYED WITH HAD A CAP ON THEM THAT HAD AN OIL RESERVOIR
OCCASIONALLY WOULD GET LOW AND CAUSE PROBLEMS
YOU SAY YOU CHECKED OUT THE ELECTRONICS SO I ASSUME YOU CHECKED VACUUM ADVANCE AND ALSO CHECKED FOR ANF VACUUM LEAKS ALREADY ?

bad points, compression , bad plugs and or plug wires,,or carbueretor needs a rebuild.. thats just the first that comes to mind but replacing the fuel pump and filter probably isnt a bad idea either,,

Check your caytalitic converter, if it is plugged up, you loose power and eventually, it won't even run at all.

Check for my false teeth. I seem to have lost them somewhere around here.
