Even if he says he lost it, it's still going to show up as expired. He'd better get it renewed in a hurry--there are nasty consequences for driving without a license (and yes, if it's expired, it's still driving without a license). Even if he has to pay an extra fee, it's worth it.

It depends on The State in which you reside. In New York, you have up to 2 years, from the expiration date, to renew it.

There are no penalties even if you go past the 2 years.

However, once 2 years have gone by since the license expired, you have to start all over again...written test, road test etc...

Remember, a Driver's License is a privilege, not a requirement...so don't worry about penalties just because the license expired 2 years ago...worry about penalties, if he is driving without a valid license.

I hope he is not driving without a valid license!

I am not aware of a law requiring you to even renew your license. However, more than likely, he will have to take all tests again. Also, if he is caught driving before he renews them, he faces getting ticketed for driving with an expired license. Usually, in most places, if that were to happen, if he shows that his has renewed them the day he appears in court, the DA will dismiss the charges. It really wouldn't accomplish a lot saying they were lost-it's been two years-and what would he answer to their question of "Why didn't you come in as soon as you knew they were lost?"
