Apparently somewhere in France. It is thought of as the chalice used to drink Jesus' blood at the last supper. There are also theories that this is a code for the actual bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalene's children who reside somewhere in France.

There's really no one answer to this-- there are at least dozens of theories about what the grail is and where it is located. There are four different cups that could possibly be the correct chalise, if the grail is an actual object. People who view the grail as a physical object tend to believe that it is the cup that Christ drank from at the last supper.
It really appeared in Arthurian legend, and many believe that it is not the object that is important, but the quest itself. The earliest mentions of the grail as an actual object don't take place until about the 12th century.
There are also theories that put the grail as a bloodline (the theory used in the fictional work, The Da Vinci Code).
I think that the Grail is fact AND fiction.

There are all types of candidates. Roselyn Chapel in Scotland claims that it is buried there. Also, a family in England has a wooden bowl which they claim is the grail--it has several miraculous cures associated with it. There is a spring in western England which is surrounded by red stone, and it is known as the Grail Spring (the red supposedly comes from the blood inside the grail. There is also one in Spain which even John Paul II went to see, and believed it to be the Holy Grail. And if you believe the DaVinci code, it was Mary Magdaline, and their ancestors walk among us today. Finally, it may have been based upon one of the original four treasures of Ireland, a large pot which was able to bring people back from the dead, and feed all who came and never run out. Actually, there is absolutely no way of knowing what the Grail was, or where it is now. After nearly 2,000 years, so many myths have grown up about so many objects that we could never hope to sort them all out.

Simply, no one knows, publically at least.
The grail has never been proven to still exist so it may have been destroyed.
There are many, many interpretations as to what the grail is (it may not even be a cup, try reading the DaVinci code for 1 take on it)
The best answer is that it is whatever you are looking for. MAke the Holy Grail your own goals and don't bother searching for a legend

I'd say it's total fiction. It's purpose? As fiction it served as a great reason for a quest. As metaphor, it stands for any ultimate thing desired.
Dan Brown, however, made a fortune from his "interpretation" of just what the Holy Grail actually is.

The Grail romances started in France and were translated into other European vernaculars; only a handful of non-French romances added any essential new elements.

Some say that it is the cup which Christ used during the last supper, and is supposed to be in Isreal somewhere.
Some think that the holy grail refers to Christ's bloodline, and he actually has offspring and descendants around today.
