A male donkey x female horse produces a mule.

A male horse x female donkey produces a hinny or jennet.

A mule looks like a donkey with the body of a horse and a hinny looks like a horse with the body of a donkey.

Male mules and hinnies are sterile. Females are normally sterile but rarely when crossed with the same species as their father may produce viable offspring.

A mule if the horse is female and a hinny if the hose is male.

Mules were economically important beasts of burden until the emergence of mechanisation, due to their hardy nature, ability to cope with rough terrain and high intelligence.

They are nearly always sterile.
