My wife is about 36 weeks. Is this normal for 36 weeks? He said that the doctors look for that. So does it mean that she has already went through "lightnening" and the baby is already "head down"? And in the right position for birth (not breech). And is that okay or is it too early for this? How long (on average) after the baby has "settled" does it take for labor to begin? Or does it even have anything to do with labor?

Look at it this way. To be born the baby has to be head down and in the right position to pass threw the birth canal. The doctor saying the baby has "settled" means the baby is ready for birth. like if something is to settle to the bottom of the water in the tub by the drain, it would come out first. Check this out: the first one is the best, buit the second gives more information on birth.

No, it doesn't necessarily mean the baby will be early...it just means that the baby will not move out of the birth position before the birth date. He'll still kick his arms and legs, but he won't be doing any more flipping. A GOOD sign, because they don't have to worry about a breech delivery.

If it's her first baby it is common for the baby to be in birthing position up to a month before hand. For subsequent babies settling often doesn't happen until a couple days before delivery.

She's fine. Don't worry! Pretty soon you'll be a dad. Congrats!
