I'd say ask around and talk to your friends and see who they have used in the past, who is fair with pricing and does good work. If they reccomend someone and speak highly of them, that's the best way to find a trustworthy person.

Get the recommendations of others yes, but then do a final check with the Better Business Bureau. If they have no record of the company, I would not hire them. Reputable companies stay in business for years, and build up reputations for honesty with all their suppliers and sub-contractors as well as with their customers. The BBB would be able to tell you about these types of standings in the business community. (Although they won't ever recommend a company.)

You can usually find a good one by word-of-mouth. You can also find three and get bids from them along with references. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau once you have name. I would use a large contractor if that is possible. I wouldn't use one that is working out of the back of his truck.

Call your Chamber of Commerce. They will know. Also go to a good Lumber yard and ask them. The contractor that buys more material is usually a good reputable one.

word of mouth is always the best way.
to get good prices u don't want to go with the big companies, however the 'little guys' are also the people who would be most likely to not do the job well. only through reccomendtations of others can you be sure that someone can be trusted to do good work at good prices. start asking your friends and neighbors.
