The power the President has to deny passage of a law that has passed the House & the Senate. Veto means "I forbid".

The President has veto power over laws passed by the Congress (House and Senate). That means the bill cannot become law because the President has Vetoed it, rejected it. It then returns to the House or Senate (wherever the bill originated). If BOTH the Senate and House can gather two-thirds of each body to still approve the law, then the President's veto is overridden, and it becomes law. This is all part of the system of checks and balances in our Constitution where each of the three branches of government has a check on the other.

A veto is a power used by a chief executive (president or governor) to kill a piece of legislation.

Usually, the body that sent the legislation (Congress or state legislature) has the power to override the veto by a two-thirds vote, and the bill becomes law despite the objections of the executive branch.

The only veto President Bush has cast was on stem cell research.

Well do you know about checks and balances in gov't? I think it has something to do with that. When the legislature creates a law, it's not up to them to pass it, it passes through the executive branch of gov't, the president. If he (or she!!) wants to pass it, he/she passes it. If they don't want to pass it, they veto it.

Veto can be a verb or a noun. For example:

-The president vetoed the bill.

OR

-The bill has a veto on it.

So, the veto power is the power that the president has to veto or pass a bill (law).

The United Nations Security Council veto power is a veto power wielded solely by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, enabling them to void any Security Council substantive resolution regardless of the level of general support. This power is exercised when any permanent member enters a "nay" vote. (An abstention vote will allow the measure to pass).

the power that a US pres. has to say NOPE to anything that passes the house and whatever, bill wise and makes it by vote of approval to his desk. He stamps VETO on it if he doesn't approve of it and that stops the bill from becoming a law.
