Originally the crest was the ornament of the helmet, or headpiece, and also afforded protection against a blow. In the early rolls it was scarcely noticed, but in later armorial grants it came into general use. In the early days of the crest it was confined to persons of rank, but in later times it has been included in every grant of arms.

Beware of sites that promise you a "unique" family crest. There are many out there that simply create them with no historical background.

The British College of Heralds has every recognized family crest on file. For it to be official, it has to be registered through them. I am not sure how to contact them via the internet, but any good book on heraldry should have their address.

I have Coats of Arms with my family crest for my name, my wifes maiden name and a marriage coat of arms that were all researched and Personally crafted by one of my clients on eBay.
Just go to eBay and look-up the member name 'blueskys23' and you will find a wealth of information oon the subject and can even have them make yours for you and send it to you.
We are more than pleased with ours and they get many compliments. Also, the prices are really reasonable.
Good luck!
