I have a BS in MKTand I currently work in the Sales & Marketing Dept at a publishing company working on the promos for various publications. I spend a big part of my day coming up with creatives for these pubs (posters, brochures, flyers, etc) in collaboration with our outside vendor (designer).

I've come to the realization a while ago that I would like to become a graphic designer and create brochures, cards, flyers, etc. I enjoy coming up with cool ideas. I love colors! ALthough I dont do the actual design, I pretty much come up with how we want a certain piece to look & feel, as well as coming up with the copy for the piece. I've saved all of the pieces that I work on from the very first page that I sketched out as to how I want something to look up into the final product.

How do I get started in this field? I've signed up for a DreamWeaver class next mo. and have been trying to fully engage myself in anything graphic. Should I get a BA or get a certificate?

photoshop, illustrator and quark xpress are the three big programs you will need to know. take classes that teach you the basics and then just use the programs and use them alot. you will be surprised at not only how proficient you get at them but how much you will teach yourself as well. i wouldnt so much focus on your education as in a BA or such as i would experience and proficiency with the applications. i hire people all the time and i could care less if they have a degree, i want to know that when i need to have work done they can get it done and in a timely manner. hope this helped, if you have any other questions dont hesitate to email me.

i design and commercials and stuff. in my experience, noone gives a hoot if you went to school or anything, they just want to know if you know the programs and can do the work well. you need to develop a portfolio and get it online. then you need to meet people in the industry. i have never gotten a worthwile job that wasnt through people i know.

i would learn dreamweaver if you want to be a website designer. otherwise photoshop and illustrator are the most important things to learn. if you want to do print ads and things you need to learn quark.
