I dont see what purpose it serves and I've been trying to figure this out for a long time. Helmets, pads, mouthpeices I can all understand but not the black paint

it's eye black, it reduces the glare/reflection from the sunlight or bright stadium lights so the player can focus on the ball or players.

foot ball isn't the only sport that uses it, several othe sports use it, but it's also widely used in Major League Baseball

some players have now gone as far as putting short phrases on them as well which is really somethin that I don't see the need for, because it seems like it's defeating the purpose.

Ok i played all the sports and we used Black eye paint to keep the sun out of our eyes and its called battle paint ... its always worn during a Big game by all the players like during playoffs or something like that .

It diminishes the glare under the eyes caused especially by light skin that grows sweaty. It's like primitive sunglasses.

It's eye black, and you put it just below the eye to stop the glare from either the sun or the lights blinding you as the light reflects off of your cheekbone.

It is to help prevent the glare of the son on there faces in their eyes. It really works!
