How creative can he get with this project? Maybe you could make it similar to a cattle crush? What I would do, is design it like a cattle crush where the mouse comes in for food and is held in place until it can be relocated. I'm against killing mice in this way, so it would be humane. If I could get really creative, I would say the food contains a syrup that makes them infertile so they can't breed anymore (maybe it passes on to all the other mice once you release it). The crush could hold the mouse in time for the syrup to work. Hope this helps, or gives you some ideas.

If you get a blueprint, then you're giving hm the answer. He has to design a contraption which will catch mice, or at elast corral them for a while. Ask him to think of regular mice and to think how can I do this another way - less messy, less violent, less death, once you have this, then you can begin to think from beginning to end.
You don't design from the completed project, you start with an idea. "I want a mouse trap that wil not kill...." as an example. Then you begin thinking of how this would work. "Ok, so first I need a box, since the mouse will be captured..." See? you start with the idea and build around it.

There is a way you could catch the mouse, without killing it, this means that you will not harm the animal also not have a mouse running around your house. When we had a mouse in our shed, because we had kept our guinea pig food there, we bought a mouse trap from homebase. Simply you put some food infront of the door of the trap and as soon as the mouse touches the food, the door shuts, this means the ,mouse is trapped into this small box kind of thing. Then later onwards you may check the trap and you can place the mouse out of the container away from your house, hopefully it will be too far to not know the way back. But it will be best to buy a couple of these as one might not be enough if its in your house. This product is a reasonable price. Or you could buy rat posion but hopefully that would be your last option.

Well, I think instead of searching for a blue print you should be creative. This is a chance for you to spend time with your son, and have some fun. All you need to think about is how to lure the mouse in and have the trap react when it comes to get its 'prize' I'm sure that you can think of something! I wish I was doing that project right now, but instead I'm stuck writing to persuade.. :(

There is no blueprint. I'm pretty sure he has to design it himself fron scratch. They want him to make up a contraption that will catch a mouse and it can be anything he can come up with. It's a way for him to use his imagination and reasoning skills. Why not help him to do that by staying out of the way?
Ever hear of the saying, "If you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a pathway to your door"? They want him to build a BETTER mousetrap....

Here's one that gets used a many hunt camps.
Bucket filled with water.
Small dowel through the ends of a can lying across the top of bucket.
Coat the centre of the can with peanut butter.
Place a ramp leading up to the rim of the bucket.
Now when the mouse goes up the ramp it will stretch out to reach the peanut butter on the can. The can will spin on the dowel, the mouse will fall into the water and drown.

If they want HIM to DESIGN it then maybe you should let him use his imagination. Kids can come up with some great ideas. The key is not doing it for him but allowing him to think the project thru himself and if needed throw in a few hints.
Good Luck
