as long as the bank has a tariff explaining their charges you can be charged for anything.

My advice to you would be, if you haven't had any unauthorised overdrafts or items returned in the past year, to contact your bank and explain that you have kept your account in good order and that you find the charge a bit excessive. On this occasion you feel that it is only fair that they refund the charge.

If they still refuse, don't carry on speaking to the monkey ask to speak to their superior/manager. Don't ask to speak to their team leader, they are just qualified monkeys.

On all occasions make sure you record the name of the person you are speaking to. This is SO important.

Finally, if they still are being funny about it, say that you will transfer your banking elsewhere, and if you want to get really funny with them, tell them that you are going to be speaking to the local paper, but save that line for when you speak to the manager.

You can be charged for Standing orders. The onus is on you to make sure that the money is in your account, exactly the same as when you set up a direct debit. The difference is that direct debits allow other companies to access your account and they control how much they take and when. Standing orders leave you in control of how much you want to send to the company and on what dates. If you are not going to have enough money in your account on the day that the standing order is due, you can change the date easily by contacting your bank and therefore save yourself the charge!

no hun that is false.
the only difference between direct debits and standing orders is that direct debits vary in price sometimes where as standing orders are a constant amount so i am afraid you do get charged.
if your payments into the bank vary you should apply for a small overdraft

Yes, they are right to charge you.

You took money from your Bank without their permission. That is THEFT.

That will teach you to be more careful with your money.
