I know looking at it now 'Friday The 13th' was quite a predictable and almost parody of horror films by today's standards, but I was 12 when it came out and I watched it through the banisters at my uncles. I practically fell down the stairs when Jason leapt from the lake at the end (sorry if I've spoilt that scene for anyone).
Currently, I'd say SAW was one of the better of recent years, but I have yet to catch Hostel which sounds the epitome of horror.

The scariest part is that someone thought the first one so good, they decided it'd be worth making a second

Urotsukidoji (Legend of the Overfiend), which is a Japanese cartoon. It features genocide, destruction, demonic rape with tentacles, nuclear war and other freaky stuff. It blows a lot of movies away, as there are no limits within animation save the imagination of the creators.

I'm gonna have to say Night of the living dead, the exorcist, or John carpeter's The Thing. Great flick, they still can't match the effects in the thing, and it was made in 83.

The Ring, it actually made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The Ring 2 was just about as scary.
