the auto industry went to a 17 digit vin in 1981. 13 is the correct # of characters. i'll give it to you as i am reading it.
1=chevrolet
s=camaro berlinetta
87=body type
j=engine code, 4.4 2 bbl carb
a= year, 1980
L= plant code
535943= production sequence
sounds like you have been to other dealers with similar results. but that is what the vin says. it doesn't look as if it started life as a z-28 or it would begin with something like 1q or 1p. i also doubt if z-28's ever had a 4.4 2bbl carb. but hey, the older these vehicles get the harder it is to maintain accurate records, so all we have is the best info published at that time. i hope this helps.

Even though it's a 1980, it should still have 17 digits. You may be looking at the engine ID number. I would call Chevy. I think the number is (800)222-1020, or (800)200-1020. They have the ability to look it up, and they have resources that can explain each individual digit, and any other info you might want to know about the vehicle.
P.S. I know the 1 at the beginning means it was built in the US. But the S tells me it is not a Chevy VIN. That's why I think you've got the wrong number off the car. Check the little sticker inside the door, there should be a secondary VIN on it. Sometimes it is stamped on the tail-lamp lens as well.

Not sure what you have. Call a parts store and they can usually do a Vin match up or a Junk yard. The only other place you'll find The Vin# is on the door or the door jam on a sticker. The sticker will also tell you what the correct tire size is for the car and the recommended tire pressures
