why is it called a belly button when it is a hole and looks nothing like a button?

In the ancient days people were terribly ashamed to have what they called "Demon Holes", so they would place a small button inside of it to keep the demons from escaping. This went on for years, up until the early 14th century. Hope this helps!

It is generally not called a "belly button" but a "navel". "Belly button" is just an old slang term for it, most probably because it vaguely looks like a button, on the inside at least.

Maybe if you've got a 'sticky out' belly button it's more like a button. Inny belly buttons are much cooler though.

Well I guess they could call it the scarred remains of an intravenous feeding hole, but belly button just sounds a lot cuter I think.

In the olden days before food and milk became plentyfull babies used to cry a lot and people were a lot thinner so the navel really stuck outwards like a button.
these days weve all grown fat and contented, babies get enough food so they are contented and dont cry. So the buttons ingress.
If you want to see real giant bellybuttons go to africa where the babies still cry for days because their mother's breast are withered.
