Is there any way of telling whether it is going to rain other than watching (or listening to) the weather forecast?

Well, if you are prone to migraines (like me), you'll get a headache from the pressure change.

Well, not really but sometimes you can see a rain storm approaching, I guess in a way that is enableing you to tell if it will rain or not. If a heavy rain is approaching you can actually hear the rain hitting the ground in the distance before it gets to you.

Check the leaves on the trees. If the leaves turn upside down, then it will rain. Also, you can smell it in the air, or if you have an ankle that is bad (like myself), it gets achy when there is rain in the air. Hope this helps.

My bad knee starts hurting, like today when it's yucky and rainy outside. Sometimes you can smell rain. Sounds weird I know, but it's smells different outside when it's going to rain.

Get a good barometer. Generally if the barometer reading is dropping, (low pressure), it meas bad whether. Barometer instruments are readily available almost everywhere.
