You want to make sure that there is plenty to eat and an assortment of flavors. Bring items that will not spoil easy and also are not messy. Sandwiches are a safe idea and are generally well liked by all. Cold chicken or beef is a good idea. Stay away from sandwiches that are best hot like shredded beef or messier sandwiches like chicken salad. Fruit is a great side dish idea and will stay fresh and is easy to store. Apples, grapes, oranges, etc are an excellent idea to complete the scene. Chips, crackers, or pate are a good idea for a side dish. Try to stray from mayonnaise salads and things similar because they spoil quite easy.
Refreshments are the next step to complete the picnic. You want to bring water above all. Also bring some champagne. Make sure to bring plenty of cups, silverware, and especially napkins

Start by making a list of what you want to eat at the picnic. Then go into one of those big supermarkets that has an on-premises food preparation section. They can tell you and sell you (sandwiches, sliced cheese and meats, salads, desserts, cold barbecued food , bottled drinks, etc). They can also tell you how much of each you will need per person. The store probably also sells plates, napkins, cups etc and maybe even picnic baskets so you could have almost all of it there. If you want alcohol visit a liquor store and ask what they have for bringing on a picnic - there are a lot of prepackaged drinks they sell.

well you wanna keep it simple, but at the same time make it elegant, you coule bring some chicken salad in containers packed around ice, a delicious desert of frest cut fruits, like Pineapple, nectarines, and fesh berries i.e chocolate dipped strawberries. Some sparkling wine, like a spumante, or white zifindale. Napkins, stemware and eating utensils, will make for a simple yet elegant Picnic. I hope it turns out well, and by all means pack a blanket and umbrella, and wonderful book of poetry. This would be romantic.

If you are trying to have a romantic picnic then I'd say go with fresh french bread with an assortment of Cheeses and fruits....Or most local grocery stores now sell pre cooked roasted chickens. You could also get some slads from the deli ( macaroni, potato, etc)

what type of picnic...a day at the park with the guys, dog and baseball or a romantic dinner under the stars?
Day @ the park - bring along the portable grill and have hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and some nice cold beer
Romantic - french baguette, fresh cheese, fruit, grilled chicken, chocolate desert (or tarts if your not into chocolate) and a bottle of nice red wine (don't forget the corkscrew and glasses)

Picnic's are fun...you can do finger type foods (cheese and crackers, sandwiches or wraps..) or go for the traditional type with fried chicken potato salad and something yummy for a treat (brownies or cookies) lots of options, just have fun!

I would bring some kind of meat product, warm biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy, and something non-alcoholic to drink.
if that's too much work, just make a salad and some turkey sandwiches. Don't skimp on the mayo!

depends how old you are I guess and what you and the other people that are going to be there prefer. But sandwiches, fruit, cheese, wine, salami, chocolates, are common choices. pretty much anything that would be easy to eat with your hands. if you bring chocolate make sure you freeze it first so that by the time you eat it, it won't be melted too bad.
