We know we want a midwife, but have not yet decided whether to have a home birth or deliver in a birthing center at our hospital. Can some of you share your experiences, good or bad, with either of these options?

Again, I'm really only interested in responses that talk about birthing centers or homebirth, not traditional hospital settings. Thanks

I meant natural as in not clinical.

We had a home birth and LOVED it! I'm so glad we did it at home. I felt WAY more relaxed and at ease while in labor at home. We didn't have to drive anywhere (both before or after the birth). Our baby was born on the bed and while I took a shower, the midwives changed the sheets, put the dirty ones in the laundry and when I got out I layed in bed with our newborn son and just cuddled and breastfed in our home. It was beautiful and I couldn't imagine it any other way. I think it is a very personal decision where you want to give birth. Think about where you would be most at ease. For most people that seems to be a hospital (mostly because I think there is a lot of fear perpetuated around birth). Trust your instincts - whether it be at home or a birth center, it sounds like you are on the right track. Good luck!

GO FOR IT! My first was born in the hospital without pain meds (though I was on an IV for Group B Strep) and it SUCKED because of the hospital staff! I loved my actual birth and NO WAY would I have an epi. I felt the pain but my body knew what it was suppose to do and just did it until the nurses wanted be tied down to the bed. I'm pregnant again and delivering a free-standing birth center with a midwife. I can't tell you how it will be but I will recommend you do not go near the hospital, even the birth center at the hospital. It's still a hospital and there are still OB's who want to cut you up. The only reason I'm going to the birth center instead of a homebirth is because we live really far from a hospital and my dh is scared to be so far away (he has severe anxiety about these sorts of things.) Visit www.mothering.com/discussions to find more info. They have a homebirthing board and lots of woman who went the natural way.

Good luck!

well I was thinking of getting a midwife too. I had a premi and was not able to. I knew I did not want an epidural so I deliver at the hospital and did it without medication. Not bad my water broke at 10:45 am contractions were very crap like through the day, they got pretty strong by about 10:00 pm and she was born by 12:06 am. I will definitely do it again.

I delivered both of my children natural. With my first I had an episiotomy (where the doctor makes an incision) they will do a local for that. With my second I didn't have anything at all and I ripped a little bit. It was a little more painful with the second child, because I could feel where he gave me a stitch. I don't know if a midwife would do an episiotomy or not, but I would recommend one. I did not have an epidural and I would recommend against that unless you had to have a c-section. Good luck with your baby, and don't worry, whatever decision you make will be the right one for you.

I'm pregnant with my first, so I don't have a story of my own. My mom had 2 kids, both natural child birth in a hospital. She used self-hypnosis for the pain and claims that it worked. She experienced very little pain. Good luck.

in Russia almost everybody goes with natural birth. ya, it hurts, but everybody survives, and forgets about the pain very soon.
But, by all means, delivery should be in the hospital. Hospitals are hospitals, you can not predict any complications. In hospitals they have all - doctors, instruments, medicine for all kind of cases. Hope for the best, but be prepared, so to say...

I had natural childbirth but not by choice. She was born in the car. I think a hospital birth is better just in case.

I agreed to all. Go to the hospital. Everything is there for you if you ever needed. A shot of EPIDURAL would spice your energy and strength up. You'll be fully energized when your baby comes. Good luck!

I took a hypnobirthing type late in my being pregnant. I hadn't incredibly practiced adequate to apply each and all the ideas yet i think of the main necessary ingredient I have been given out of it grew to become right into a start without concern. I laboured at abode for 19 hours and then i grew to become into transferred to the well-being facility by way of fact I had a sluggish 2nd degree. 3 hours later I had a appropriate toddler boy. i grew to become into calm in the process the comprehensive labour, and for the previous few hours I had this mind-blowing sense of peace. i grew to become into completely interior my physique, it grew to become into mind-blowing. My husband mentioned I regarded extreme lol. by making use of the way, 22 hours glided by making use of like no longer something, noticeably as quickly as I have been given to the 2nd degree. i grew to become into so centred and 'interior the 2nd' I lost all sense of time. It grew to become into such a great journey i needed to pass abode and make yet another toddler suitable away :). My husband grew to become into especially traumatized nevertheless. I had a nil.33 degree tear and he watched the entire ingredient. yet I incredibly felt the tear, i did no longer even think of i'd wish stitches. i grew to become into taken aback while he advised me i'd had approximately sixty stitches! My physique could have been pumping me crammed with endorphins lol. Oh and various smooching incredibly facilitates. They gave me oxytocin for about an hour on the well-being facility yet they grew to become it off by way of fact the toddler's coronary heart fee grew to become into slowing. After that i attempted smooching between contractions and it worked extra effective than the oxytocin. i actual felt the contractions get extra effectual. next time i will initiate the smooching lots before, perchance i will have a shorter labour. sturdy success inclusive of your start, wish you have a amazing journey!
