do i get to vote for ex bass players?if so my answer is the late great john entwhistle of the who-for sheer variation, speed, and melody there was nobody better than the mighty ox-he always played using all of the bass and with a fluency that stayed with him right to the end.also, when the who played live he always seemed to vary what he played a little every time-and to do all that with the rest of the band smashing stuff up and going crazy he must have been one of the greats!if he doesnt count then i agree with a lot of the other guys and go for flea of the chilli peppers-hes easily the best one alive, but is a little one dimensional for my tastes-wish i could play like him though!!!!

Hands down, Victor Wooten. He plays with Bela Fleck and the Fleck Tones. He is just absolutely amazing. No flash, no frills, no publicist, no jet, just pure raw talent.
Ask a serious bass player who the best is and they will say Victor Whooten.

I take it you mean "living" which leaves out Entwhistle and Berry Oakley.
Ignoring all the jazzy twiddlers, the best bassist in the world is probably Jack Casady ( note the spelling) .
If you have never heard his work, look him up you'll be amazed.
PS I saw that flash guy with Bela Fleck, he was dressed like a pantomime pirate and is definately in the "Pantitucci twiddlers" mould.

Louis Jordon must be God's own bassist! Nobody can make people get down the way he does. Just put on a Michael Jackson album and enjoy!

OK..I see someone named Nikki Sixx, did you read their book,,the guy is a hack..But anyways, Victor Wooten smokes solo but with the band it sounds like crap . Check out Spider Sineive from Streetheart. They do a cover of Under my Thumb that is amazing...And Geddy Lee, but that goes without saying..
