The norm for the jack of diamonds (in the Hearts variation that uses it, of course) is that it counts -10 points for whoever wins the trick containing it. In terms of strategy, if on a given hand you see you can't win the jack yourself, try to dump it on whoever ate the Queen of Spades that round. The beauty of the Jack of Diamonds variation is that it means all four suits are "live" -- clubs because the deuce of clubs is the opening lead, hearts and spades because they count points, diamonds because of the Jack. Strategy: If you're dealt the Jack, pass it unless you have at least four other diamonds to protect it. With five or more diamonds to the Jack, lead diamonds at very opportunity, forcing a player holding a higher diamond to expend it in order to prevent a player behind him from winning the trick with his/her hypothetical Jack. If you hold the Jack and diamonds are led, don't play it -- unless, of course, you're in fourth position and the A, K or Q hasn't been played on that trick. In third seat, you may want to chance playing the Jack if two of the three higher cards have appeared on earlier tricks; this finesse should work 2/3 of the time, but there's no guarantee... This anaysis, needless to say, ignores the menacing presence of the Queen, but that's a topic for another time.

If you're in the lead you can lead it... If someone else has led a diamond you can play it... If someone else leads a suit other than diamonds and you are out of that suit you can dump it....
