It Can only be electrical or mechanica,. I would first check it electrically with a volt meter. Have someone switch it while you check the wire for the presence of voltage. You will need and be able to read an electrical diagram to see how it toggles between engaged and disengaged. These days they are electicall actuated on or off. My guess is that it is electrical, Good luck!

well it should not hurt it but i have no idea what could have happened but most cars stay in overdrive unless you are going up a hill you can cut it off to obtain more speed so dont worry to much

If it's a standard transmission it's one thing and if it's an automatic it's a different problem,
