On my due date with my first daughter the doctor decided to strip my membranes because I had been having problems with muscle spasms (not contractions) for the 2 weeks prior. That was at 3:30 in the afternoon. At 7:30 that night I realized I was having contractions and my daughter was born at 1:15 the next morning. I can't guarantee it will go that fast for you, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.
You're right, it is very unpleasant.

Effacement is a better indicator of success than dilation. Since you are 70% effaced I would say that your chances are good of this starting in 24-48 hours. Carry on as usual, use some nipple stimulation to help things along if you need too, take a bath, relax, eat lightly, drink lots, go for a good walk. I bet you will have this babe pretty soon. Congrats!

Hi, I had mine done when I was pregnant with my first. The stupid doc didn't bother letting me know what he was doing either. I went in for a routine visit at 38 weeks and when he did that to me I about came off that table. It is the worse feeling, especially when you aren't expecting it. He did mine because he wanted my water to break. Well i wasn't due, no comps, no dilating, so why did it need to break early? It didn't. I ended up going in labor 4 days later. Water broke around 8 am and I had her at 10:30 that night. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and CONGRATS!!!

Yes. My midwife did it twice (was horrible both times). I don't think it sped up labor and my water didn't break. I got a staph infection that I think came from the second time they were stripped and ended up with a horrible labor.
If you want to get labor started (I'd wait a few more days if I were you) drink a bottle of castor oil.

sometimes it paintings and infrequently it would not. From own journey, my OB swept my membranes at 40 weeks and that i went into labor 3 days later. I additionally be responsive to women who had their mambranes stripped thrice without result. sturdy success!

I had this done, and it didn't help at all, I ended up being 1 week overdue and still had to have a c-section even after labor spontaneously started.
