Is there a way to shut it off, or is the computer trying to tell me something? Is it nessessary? No, I dont' have a buddy list so it's not that.

that sounds like u do have umm.. IM cuz when the door opens it means one of ur contacts is online and when it closes its cuz sumone gets offline.. well it think its that
