I was told that there is a rubber paint that can be used on cement floors. We are painting the basement of a small building and would like the kids to be able to enjoy it while we are working this winter. Thank you.

It is called elastomeric paint and it will appear like rubber. I've used it, but do not recommend it. You can get it at janitorial supply houses and on special order from the home improvement stores. Even with several coats it will flake and wear off with normal traffic. It also does not do well in moisture. Although most manufacturer's claim it will last for 10 years, that was not my experience.

There are these new rubber pieces that fit together like a puzzle and come in a variety of color that might be a lot less work, last longer, are reuseable, colorful, washable, are more durable and are relatively inexpensive. They are used in basements and garages because they are so easy to clean and keep your feet warmer. They can be found at Lowes and you can check them out on the HGTV website where they have been used in many applications (check out Room by Room).

I found several websites when I did a yahoo search for rubber paint. It seems like it is used as liner for pools. So if you read about "chlorinated" rubber paint, all that means is that the paint has been treated so that it will not degrade in a pool environement where you have active chlorine.

You may also want to consider an epoxy based paint. I used this on my garage floor and it is extremely durable. The only downside is that it is very slick when water gets on it.

there is, but it is thin. it does not put down a mat on the concrete. all it will do is smooth the floor a bit and keep the children from abrasions. you might want to consider throwing some kind of a cheap rug down. it would be warmer and more comfortable for the kids.

45 years painting and I would not paint a concrete floor. As soon as they start playing on it, it will start coming up regardless of which one y ou put on it. Stain it instead. It will keep its color. Call around paint stores and find concrete stain. It is easier to clean up and the color will stay.

Concrete will dust up and unless you paint it right, thoroughly cleaning it off and etching it, nothing is going to stay down.
