Oh, man, I asked a question about this awhile back, and believe it or not, many people didn't think that McCarthy was wrong, or anti american. They also believed that it was worth it to topple communism (which we know happened under Reagan) They refused to believe that people's lives were ruined, and felt that all of the victims had it coming. Mistakes are NEVER made, is their thinking. If mistakes WERE made, people would have to question their government, and everything they thought they knew. It's uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as the reality

I assume you mean Joseph McCarthy.

He made wild accusations regarding communists in the government. There WERE many. But he didn't know who or where they were.

The Venona project - declassified Soviet documents released in the 1990s - make clear how helpful many Americans (including the Rosenbergs) were to our enemies.

Some would point out that witches didn't exist in 1692 Salem but that communists did in 1950's Washington.

I believe HUAC - the House Un-American Actiities committee - was very aggressive in ferretting out alleged communists, but McCarthy was a senator.

One could well argue that mere membership 20 years previously in communist organizations should not result in blacklisting - but I am not aware of anyone blacklisted on totally false accusations. If I'm wrong I hope someone will correct me.

Sounds like some people went overboard to a degree. I guess that ignoring a genocidal threat - Hitler - in the 1930s made people careful about not ignoring another one.

If you mean Senator McCarthy? Well, with the fall of the Soviet Union, we did find out that well over 75% of the spies he went after turned out to really be spies. Amazing how history has actually vindicated him for most of what he did. His probelm was in thinking he was above the people and could treat everyone like crap.
