why dont you just eat something else?! theres alot of vegetables out there for you that are good for the body and have the same effect as the spinach. even though the packaging was from before the contamination started.... think about it this way, the bacteria had to start from SOMEWHERE so you never know if it's in your package. They did say cooked spinach was okay but now they're changing that. The news will now tell you to simply just throw your spinaches away. don't matter if it's prepackaged or just straight from the vegetable rack. I wouldn't risk it. cook something else for dinner. =)

According to the Center for Disease Control...
ADVICE FOR CONSUMERS ABOUT THIS OUTBREAK
FDA has advised consumers not to eat fresh spinach at this time.
Persons who develop a diarrheal illness and who ate fresh spinach in the previous week should contact their health-care provider and have a stool specimen tested for E. coli O157.
Persons who ate fresh spinach and feel well do not need to see a health-care provider
GENERAL ADVICE FOR CONSUMERS ABOUT E. COLI O157 IN PRODUCE
E. coli O157 is highly susceptible to heat. For example, E. coli strains in water are killed after 1 minute of boiling. Cooking vegetables well will kill E. coli. Ideally, food that will be consumed without cooking should be safe to eat. However, bacteria stick to produce even when it is washed, and sometimes the bacteria are inside the produce. These are some things consumers can do to protect themselves from bacteria in produce consumed without cooking:
- Wash produce with clean cool running water just before eating and cut away damaged areas. (Firm produce can also be scrubbed with a brush.)
- Peel fruits and remove the outer leaves of leafy vegetables.
- Refrigerate cut produce
- Wash hands before handling food and in between handling different types of food
- Avoid cross-contamination – use a different knife and cutting board for meat and produce.
- Avoid drinking unpasteurized juice.
- Supermarkets and restaurants can require their suppliers to provide proof that produce is handled using the best hygienic practices all the way from the farm to the table.
So, there you have it. If you absolutely must eat that spinach, boil it for at least a minute. The CDC (and common sense) suggest that you just discard it, however. People have died from this - do you really want to put your health at risk for a couple dollars' worth of spinach?

The news report said that ONLY fresh spinach was tainted, so I assume that canned or frozen is ok

Yuck!!! Spinach tastes like you-know-what. Totally!!! Eat higher on the hog like with a nice bowl of turnip greens flavored with fat-back, a dash of vinegar and some salt.
And the "juice"? The pot-liquor? Sop; it up with cornbread, y'all.
Wow, you know?
