like my questions states- who developed/ or came up the idea for a highway/freeway. how did they go about building them, what materials were used and when was asphalt introduced etc...how was the highways/freeways mapped out etc..

well i have not gotten really what i was looking for.. I want to know for example.. i was told by my grandparents from yuma to San diego there was a wood plank (one way) "road" and if opposing traffice was coming one vehicle would have to pull over..so i am looking for something that gives detail along those lines-who made them etc...

I think the first highway in the U.S. was the 110 fwy in Pasadena. It took the rich folks who lived in the area to downtown. And, since this was not a major, traffic clogged commuter road at the time, the purposely made it wind and curve, so that the folks could enjoy the ride more than just a straight shot. Thanks, we now have to live with it as a major, inefficient artery.

If you are specifying the US, then others have already answered. But, the Romans, who built roads here in the UK that you can still find and are better made than the present day roads.

They built then all 'as the crow flies,' which must have made for long dull marches, but were very effective for getting large bodies of troops from here to there very quickly ....the 'reason' they built them in the first place.

WEEZ is right it is the Pasadena freeway but it is highway10 the 110 is the Harbor fwy. not a fun freeway build for 35mph, exits at Sharp right angles .
