Mostly ... intention. In energy work, intention is 3/4 of the equation. There is a very good book called The Power of Reiki by Tanmaya Honervogt that illustrates Reiki hand positions for self-treatments, plus relaxation positions. You do not have to be attuned to Reiki to receive benefit doing the hand positions on yourself.

Yoga, Tai Chi, and several other Eastern exercises/philosophies also work to stimulate the flow of chi to release blockages. Please feel free to email me if you have further questions.

One method for the beginner attempting to 'discover' chi would be to focus your meditation on a single point approximately three inches below your naval...
Try reversing your breathing pattern in a way in which when you inhale, 'slow' and 'steady'...your belly pulls inward rather than expanding. Your thought should be on the 'one' point where you begin to actually feel yourself breathing in and out from that spot on your body as it opens up.
Feel the breath come in and go out from the 'one' point. As it comes into you, see it as an energy which may spin, and have a noticable color to it.
When you have succeeded in this transfere of energy with the universe, having 'opened up'...you can then begin to explore moving that Chi to other areas of your body for strengthening and healing.
Have a happy day.
