My 14 yr old daughter who has learning disabilties & needs a *little* extra help; she leaves her things out in her room constantly. The only problem I have is that she has two younger siblings, who could possibly get hurt by her leaving out things such as small objects they could choke on, sometimes cleansers, scissors, etc. Just things that should not be left out where the kids could possibly get to. FYI her room is usually closed with a child-proof knob, however, it's still not acceptable for those things to be out where the kids can get to them. She can put these things on a dresser, in drawers, away where they are supposed to be.

I am at my wits end and want to just throw stuff away now.
I have tried taking the stuff I find and putting it in a bag until a month later, but she doesn't care.

Is it wrong for me to throw out her personal belongings? If you're a teenager, how would that make you feel? If you're a mom, any other ideas that have worked?

THANKS!!!

if she didnt have learning disabilities, I would say the above answers are ok. But because of that, NO!!!

You already mentioned that she doesnt notice/care when you do the bag thing.

Besides, her room is her personal area. You cant justify her having to clean up HER area for the convenience of the little kids that shouldnt be in there in the first place!! Dont let the little kids in there if they could get hurt!

heres what worked for me (a 16yo, forgetful male):

we cleaned up my room PERFECTLY and put EVERYTHING where it belongs. Then when I take stuff out, as soon as I am done I put it back. I know that sounds corny, but I can always find what I need, and I dont get in trouble for a messy room!

Today while she is in school pick up everything that is on the floor, on the bed, desk, etc. Put into boxes or bags and give away to good will. Keep on doing it until she learns to pick up her stuff. Just because she has a learning disablity dosn't mean she can't learn to things around the house. You need to make her do things. Or you will be doing things for her all her life. She needs to learn to do things on her own or she will be living with you her whole life.

If her bedroom has a door attached shut it. That pretty much takes care of the taking stuff and putting it into a bag.

Tell her u will throw them away if they are left out...
Once u see something left out take it and hide it
when u realize things r not out give her back one everyday there is nothing left out

Put all her stuff in a bag and tell her you threw it away. And tell her everything she leaves out you are throwing away. I would pick up my **** if my mom told me that.

My parents always told me if I didn't pick it up they would throw it out. It always made me clean up. If she doesn't care, than call her bluff and throw it out for real.
