Having a cold won't affect how your tattoo heals. Using Vaseline or Neosporin or wrapping it up in Saran wrap will. The best way to let it heal is to let your tattoo "scab" over. That is the best way to keep infection out and the color in. Keeping the skin over-moisturized will prevent your skin from hardening into a natural "bandage" (so to speak). Use Lubriderm lotion to help prevent the scab from cracking and Dr. Bronner's castille soap to clean it. And don't itch or pick at the dry skin and scabs that will form-- that will only cause scar tissue and will appear as light blotches on your tattoo.

Yes, make sure you keep it covered at night (saran wrap and neosporin) for the first week or so, to keep your sheets off of it. During the day keep it open to the air as much as you can, but always keep ointment on it until it is fully healed. You can wash it with a mild soap and warm water, but make sure the soap does not contain any fragrence or color, that will ruin a tattoo.

So long as you keep it covered to prevent infection until the sight heals properly, you should be alright.
