Depends on what you mean by "cult"...
I'd have to opt for the original "Night of the Living Dead" (1968). It has gone on to be regarded as something of a classic, but, when it was released, it was about as low-profile as it's possible for a film to be. Made on a shoestring budget with only a couple of professional actors sprinkled in amongst a bunch of Pittsburgh locals, it was made in glorious gritty black-and-white. It's SO gritty, in fact, that it has almost a documentary-type of vibe about it. Romero also employed the tactic of having either a radio or television news broadcast playing in the background throughout much of the film, lending to the realistc "breaking news" feel of the events depicted.
