So it's election season and I am thinking what I would say if I could run. Tell me what you think:
~Government can and should be better. Everybody knows we need some level of government, but we argue over how much there should be. We need to set our priorities and only spend on those things. Let's cut the fat and put tax dollars where they're most needed.
~Protecting our vote needs to be top priority - everybody gets their one vote. If a state wants to use a voting machine, they have to prove the machine works first. No vote challenges without evidence, and every vote will have a paper ballot.
~The "war on terror" will be won by the intelligence community, not by men on the ground with M16s. We need to support our fighting men and women, not over-extend them. Stop looking sideways at people with certain backgrounds and use our resources better.
~Bring back privacy! Your SS# is yours, your credit data is yours. Nobody gets them without your permission.
I'll respond as you answer.

Neil, your comment about votes not counting is EXACTLY the problem. Voting is supposed to be the people's voice, but the system is just as corrupt at the people getting elected!
~Voting machines have counted 2,000+ votes in precincts that only have 150 voters.
~In some areas anybody can challenge your right to vote WITHOUT evidence and unless you can prove it you get turned away.
~$$ buys most of our elections, we need to limit campaign funding so big donors can't buy our representatives any more.
~We need instant runoff voting to fight the two-party system and their all-or-nothing game.
~Visibility in government - if you do something wrong you can't hide behind national security's skirt and pretend that you don't have to answer.
~Start small. If you feel lost in the system, get involved with local issues and races. Your efforts will be more obviously rewarded when it's all happening in your neighborhood. You don't just vote for the President!

Warren, assuming I'm running for an Executive position, my job isn't to make the laws, it's to make sure that the lawmakers do their job well. How I would do that:
~Hold them accountable. If a bill has too much pork, if it doesn't do its purpose, I veto it. That's part of "good government" in my mind.
~I would pay attention to what's in committee, and if the pork/compromising gets deep (or is unrelated) I take a stroll up to the hill and tell them to get their crap together.

The problem is NEVER establishing a platform. That is the easy part. What you have suggested would probably be endorsed by everyone. However, the problem has two facets: First, how do you get everyone to agree just what the "level of government" should be, just what is tax fat (Defined differently by every member of Congress. Healthy spending if it benefits their district, tax fat if it does not. Thus they all compromise and we end up with TONS of tax fat!!), and what should be and should not be "private." Secondly, HOW do you get it all done with such disagreement? THAT is the biggest problem.

Chow!!

I like what you have to say, but you would have to come with more to the table. A lot of politians know that these are things people want, and promise to do these, then get in office and do what they want. You need to have very strict guidlines for yourself that you stick by your entire campaign. Let them know you mean what you say. And dont wish/wash to please someone or get the vote. That is what makes people take notice and vote for you. Sometimes you dont see that in a campaign and people just have to pick the lessor of two evils. (much like our last presidential elections).
But I would definatly here what else you had to say.
