I'm going to go with The Doors. IMO they were not just the first rock band to meld blues and rock with jazz, classical themes, and even poetry. They were also the first to show (or at least try to show) that rock and roll could be an art form, and not just kids gettin' f***ed up and having fun.

Would have to say King Crimson - they are often cited for the first to play progressive rock - which is defined as long playing with articulate lyrics, intricate melodies with some classical influences, and themes (with compositions divided up to four parts). Some also known for 'psychedelic' themes. Other pioneering bands are Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Also have to mention The Moody Blues, Frank Zappa and even Deep Purple (although very much heavy metal as well).

Well, I consider SGT. PEPPER'S to be the first prog-rock album, if that's any indication . . .
King Crimson would probably be the first prog-rock band: although The Nice, Genesis and Yes also released their debut albums in 1969, Crimson was full-blown archetypal prog from the gate.

YES
Then maybe Genesis, Renaissance, PFM, MAN, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Jethro Tull.
