your baby knows what's best for him!!!

how old is your baby? why are you trying to change to the bottle?

the nipple on a bottle has a totally different sucking action required, and it could be that your baby is just getting frustrated because 1) the nipple has a different taste 2) the milk has a different taste 3) he just wants his mommy!

First off, make sure you aren't weaning cold turkey! Weaning needs to be done gradually. If your baby isn't even used to taking a bottle, you're definatley going to need to go slowly.

You should not be the one offering the bottle. Your son is smart! He knows you have the real thing fresh from the tap! Of course he's not going to take a bottle willingly when you've got something much better. :-) Have Dad or Grandma or someone else offer the bottle, preferably without you in the room. If possible, try pumping your own milk to go in the bottle at first. The familiar taste may make the less familiar experience easier on baby.

Once you get him taking a bottle willingly, slowly begin dropping feedings. You'll probably be dropping one about every 5 days. This will help to prevent you from being engorged and will make the transition easier for your baby as well.

EDITED TO ADD:
Keep in mind that you could have the caregiver offer the bottle during the day when you are apart and continue to nurse when you are together.

You send him to your mom's or sister's house for 3 days. He will have no choice but to take the bottle since mom's breast won't be there for him. A lot of mothers have this problem because they never introduced the bottle to the baby until now when their ready to ween them off. While the breast milk is absolutely the best, new mothers should try pumping and leaving the baby every now and then to get them used to feeding from a bottle so it makes it easier when they get converted to bottle. Its not gonna be easy, but it has to be done. Or you could leave the baby with some ready made bottles for hubby and you take a nice 3 day weekend by yourself to get away.

You can try pumping your milk into a cup, soak the nipple in that cup for a couple of days, use that nipple for a bottle feeding and have dad feed the baby. You need to leave the room. Let dad drip a few drops in his mouth with the bottle nipple, he'll get the hang of it.

Well, my first advice would be dont. But since you explained that you're going back to work, get some of the Elan bottles from walmart, they're designed to be more like the breast.

Also, may I reccomend getting a hospital grade pump and still pumping for your son, so that he can get all the important nutrients that are in breastmilk.

Have you tried using the Dr. Brown bottles? I didn't have this problem with my son, but have read that these bottles may help. Another good bottle for newborns are the Playtex Nursers. Buy the latex nibbles instead of of the ones that come with the bottle. The latex one are a brown color. Good luck to you.

Could someone else give him the bottle? He assosiates you with the good stuff and is un-likely to take a bottle as a result. Also, can you just use bottles while you're at work and nurse him when you and he are together?

Good luck!

Well first do not give in! You will teach him that he is the boss and sceaming gets him what he wants. Be consistant and firm. He may scream for a few days but when he realizes that it is bottle or nothing, he will calm down and opt for the bottle.

I'm still BF'ing but whenever I had to give my daughter a bottle someone else did it. My husband, my Mom whatever. When we started I wasn't even in the room.
