You need to bring a lot of money with you. The exchange rate from dollars to pounds is horrendous. It's basically $2 for every pound. Whatever you buy in the UK will cost about twice as much as it would in the U.S.

First things first..how much money can you get? Figure out a budget, how much each day you can spend on food, hotel goodies and moving around the city. Then do an itemized ;list..what do you know you will need to get there? Food, drink, toiletries, bus fair, maybe a museum or 2? then don't forget to add some money for clubbing. I know you might not do it a lot, but how can you resist beautiful brow eyes, an English accent..and your friend egging you on to go to this club just once please?! then go from there save money for tickets back..a bit extra if for some reason like an emergency you have to go back early or late ( I don't think airlines think that cute boy flirting with you over coffee ten minuets before your plane leaves is an emergency, but I do!!) and a little extra just in case. Don't forget the exchange rate!

The general rule for Americans travelling to London a few years ago was to double the US price of anything you'd buy in order to get an approximation of the cost in London. But now I think the best thing to do is to triple it. So if it costs a dollar in your town, it'll probably cost $3.00 in London.
If you want to see England and not just London, try looking into working at a National Trust work site for a week. At 90 pounds a week it is a cheap way to see the country and meet people. But you have to do manual work. It isn't difficult, but it is part of the deal. Or try Hospitality.com. Good luck!

If I hadn't had a friend to stay with when I went a cple of years ago, I would have been on the street. London is TOO expensive to stay for ny amount of time. Look for B&B's at Victoria station, and stay north east of London. That seems to be Less expensive. The average sandwich price is $30. in London

There are some very cheap places in london but be careful I stayed in one in the summer with some friends and we booked it because it was so cheap - but you couldnt move in the bathroom unless you walked sideways and all they served for breakfast was eggs with sliced ham - eggs with cheese - or eggs ! this was in bloosmbury so watch out for it as it came up as the cheapest as well - travel lodges and inns are good as well and the twin rooms are reasonable. Also everything you buy in central london is costly so as much as you can bring would be good.
