When I'm making my budget, I allocate money for bills and other living expenses, and then subtract that from the total amount available. The remainder is money for food, gas, and other variable expenses. There's a budget calculator on money.com under a section named Money 101. It takes into consideration your income, and allocates money accordingly. It's nice because 15% of it goes to savings. So, if you wind up going over budget, you're still not spending more than you're making.

Here is what worked for me. I started it in 2003, and have been doing it 100% of the time, 365 days a year, since then. Get a file folder and some white lined paper, preferably without margins, the college ruled (narrow ruled); approximately 39 lines on a sheet. Starting today, document every time you spend money. One line per item: The amount, the payee, the address or location, the purpose of the expense. Check, debit, cash, coins in a vending machine or a parking meter, no exceptions!! I have found that the self-discipline in documenting my financial life actually paid off in unexpected ways. It is EASY; rarely have I had a 24-hour period that contained more than twelve line-items. On the first of every month, analyze what you spent by category for the preceding month, or in the case of the first month, the thirteen day period Sept. 18 - 30, 2006. Set goals based on that analysis, and make yourself achieve them in terms of earnings, expenses in various categories. Hint: there is no "typical" month. Only set October 1st - 7th's goals based on September. Your goals will be different in three months, and they should be. Planning one day at a time is more than 90+ percent of people do.

Oh, I almost forgot: it DOESN'T WORK unless you keep this key tool where it does any good at all. Put it there, and keep it there at all (translated ALL; one hundred percent of the) times:

"in a file box on the right front passenger seat of your car."

Be honest with yourself, look at your spending for the past 12 months. Decide where you over spent and see if you can adjust that. It costs alot to live now days. I've also notice people who call themselves poor have bottled water, cable tv, dvd's galore, time shares, they smoke, too many pets, etc.... and no savings. Pay yourself first (savings) or if you are in credit card debt pay them off first they are costing you up 25% interest money you could be saving. This may require you taking a second part-time job. But it will be worth it! Before you know you will be saving saving saving. One of the best feelings I ever had was having 6 months budget saved in the bank. What Freedom!
