I have performed in the pit orchestra for many musicals (the Nutcracker, Dido and Aaneas, The Music Man, Fiddler, etc) and I would have to say that the best one I have seen is the Fiddler on the Roof. I performed that sucker 5 nights a week and sometimes 3 performances a day, and I have to say that it sold out the croud every time. I know the Nutcracker isn't a musical, but it would come in second just for the musical score.

This is a loaded question. The "Musical" has taken on many forms since its inception in the late 19th century. Its roots, of course, date much farther back than that--to opera. Assuming you don't include opera, here are my personal picks from my own categorization.

>Early "Operetta": Pirates of Penzance (all Gilbert and Sullivan operettas seem quite similar, frankly)
>Traditional American Musical Comedy: "Oklahoma" for being the "first"; "The Music Man" for being my personal favorite
>Modern American Musical: "Pippin"
>English Musical Theater: "Camelot"
>Musical Drama: "Les Miserables" (I saw this in London and it was my most profound theater experience yet)
>Best Musical made into a movie: "The Sound of Music" or "The Kind and I"; I've never been able to choose between those two. "Mary Poppins" holds a special place, too, 'cause it was the first movie I ever saw in the theater and I still love it!

There are so many others I love, but these are my choices for "cream of the crop"!

The Sound of Music

Godspell - My favorite that I worked... the arrangements and costumes were rewritten to match the production in 1985.

Cabaret - Just great memories of a production in 1986. I had to drink 4 cases of champagne to get empty bottles for the props... helped me to do the scenic art.

Sound of Music - Flat out the most sentimental of the shows I've worked... over 9 different productions over the years. Mom's second favorite musical.

Cats - Aside from the breathtaking music, costumes, sets, and dance... it was my first show I worked as a union member.

Evita - Favorite for BALLS out incredible powerful SONGS !! My SECOND union show... I got chewed out for singing along with the chorus.

South Pacific - Navy based, My Mother's Favorite... anyone doing this and need a prop-master or scenic artist ?

Chorus Line - Edwina Garcia... I still have a crush on you !

It was on TV the other night. The best are first: Singing in the Rain, then Wizard of Oz, then West Side Story, then Sound of Music....
